PortfolioCrafter - Market Commentary 9/28/07

Friday, September 28th, 2007

PortfolioCrafterStocks closed mildly lower, but with the major indexes netting monthly, quarterly and year-to-date gains, after a slew of economic data fell largely in line with expectations and investors looking for clues as to whether the Federal Reserve would cut interest rates again next month. Some upbeat economic news and cautious comments from a Fed official dampened bets that the central bank will keep cutting interest rates next month.

The Dow Jones industrial average closed down 17.31 or 0.12% to 13,895.63, the broader S&P 500 closed down 4.63 or 0.30% to 1,526.75, and the tech-fueled Nasdaq composite closed down 8.09 or 0.30% to 2,701.50. For the month, the Dow gained 3.9%, the S&P rose 3.6%, and the Nasdaq climbed 4%. For the quarter, the Dow rose 3.5%, the S&P climbed 1.5%, and the Nasdaq gained 3.8%. For the year, the Dow is up 11.3%, the S&P is ahead 7.6%, and the Nasdaq has advanced 11.8%. Market breadth was negative. On the New York Stock Exchange, losers beat winners by 9to 7 on volume of 1.3 billion shares. On the Nasdaq, decliners topped advancers by 3 to 2 as 1.90 billion shares changed hands.

The better than expected reading on consumer spending in August, surprised many investors given the tightened credit climate at the time and no signs of recovery in the housing market. Investors had been betting that more negative economic news would push the Federal Reserve to keep cutting interest rates, as it did last week, to keep the economy from slipping into a recession. This has had the investors disappointed. Shares of 3Com Corp. closed up $1.26 or 34.24% to $4.94, after it agreed to sell itself for $2.2 billion to Bain Capital Partners LLC and Huawei Technologies Co., the largest networking company in China. The all-cash offer values 3Com at more than $5.30 a share, and represents a premium of 44% over Thursday’s closing price of $3.68.

Stock of Alcatel Lucent closed up $0.42 or 4.31% to $10.17, after its CEO Patricia Russo has been given a month to devise an emergency restructuring plan for the board after the company issued its third profit warning under her leadership earlier this month.

U.S. light crude for November lost $1.28 to $81.60 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

All the best,

PortfolioCrafter - Market Commentary 9/27/07

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

PortfolioCrafterStocks advanced after a government report cast positive light on the labor market and helped offset recessionary worries. Investors are betting that a big drop in new home sales and a weak reading on GDP growth will make the Federal Reserve more likely to cut interest rates further.

The Dow Jones industrial average closed up 34.79 or 0.25% to 13,912.94, the broader S&P 500 closed up 5.96 or 0.39% to 1,531.38, and the tech-fueled Nasdaq composite closed up 10.56 or 0.39% to 2,709.59. Market breadth was positive. On the New York Stock Exchange, winners beat losers 2 to 1 on volume of 1.2 billion shares. On the Nasdaq, advancers beat decliners by 4 to 3 as 1.7 billion shares changed hands.

Stocks have been rising since the Federal Reserve cut interest rates last week for the first time in four years, and that optimism was continuing to put a floor under the market this week. The economic reports don’t suggest higher inflationary pressures or a big drop in consumer spending. The new home sales fell to a 795,000 annual unit rate in August, the lowest level in seven years, from an 867,000 unit rate in July. The GDP growth was revised down to 3.8% in the second quarter from a previous read of 4.0%. Tomorrow’s personal income and spending reports will be the next indicators of how the consumer - whose spending fuels more than two-thirds of economic growth - is holding up.

Shares of Microsoft closed down $0.01 or 0.03% to $29.49, despite reporting that its Halo 3 video game racked up about $170 million in first-day sales. Fans pre-ordered more than 1.7 million copies of the game, and more than 10,000 stores opened at midnight Monday to start selling.

Stock of Sallie Mae closed up $4.11 or 9.13% to $49.12, on reports that a group led by private equity firm J.C. Flowers is willing to renegotiate the $25 billion merger deal with the student loan company. Sallie Mae was dealt a blow when the buyers said they wanted out of the deal because of the economic environment and legislation signed by President Bush on Thursday that will trim education-lending subsidies.

Shares of KB Home closed down $0.62 or 2.57% to $24.71, after reporting a steep third-quarter loss that was worse than what analysts were expecting. It also warned that the housing market is likely to worsen through 2008. KB reported a loss of $35.6 million, versus earnings of $153.2 million in the year-ago period.

Stock of Palm Inc. closed up $0.97 to 6.29% to $16.40, after it unveiled a new device that the company hopes will appeal to a broader base of cell phone buyers. This device is dubbed the Centro.

Shares of Rite Aid closed down $0.21 or 4.16% to $4.84, after reporting a second-quarter loss versus a year ago that was worse than what analysts were forecasting. The drug store chain also warned that it would post a bigger quarterly loss for fiscal-year 2007 than it had previously thought.

U.S. light crude oil for November delivery rose $2.58 to $82.88 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Last week, the October contract settled at a record high of $83.32. However, this is below inflation-adjusted highs hit in the early 1980s, which would be equal to at least $95 a barrel today.

All the best,
Manuel Jesus-Backus

PortfolioCrafter - Market Commentary 9/26/07

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

PortfolioCrafterStocks ended higher with the gains tied largely to a tentative deal ending a two day United Auto Workers strike against General Motors Corp. that could set the stage for other automakers to cut health-care costs. The rally got additional steam after a report said that Bear Stearns is in serious talks with Warren Buffett and other investors about selling a minority stake in the company.

The Dow Jones industrial average closed up 99.50 or 0.72% to 13,878.15, the broader S&P 500 closed up 8.21 or 0.54% to 1,525.42, and the tech-fueled Nasdaq composite closed up 15.58 or 0.58% to 2,699.03.

Market breadth was positive. On the New York Stock Exchange, winners topped losers by 2 to 1 on volume of 1.3 billion shares. On the Nasdaq, advancers beat decliners 4 to 3 on volume of 2.0 billion shares.

Economic reports expected later in the week on personal income and spending will give an indication of how the consumer has been holding up following the summer’s financial market turmoil. The August durable goods orders fell 4.9% in the month after rising 6.1% in the previous month. Economists thought orders would fall to 3.5%. However, investors took the weak report in stride, perhaps figuring that it adds ammunition to bets that the Federal Reserve can continue cutting interest rates.

Shares of Red Hat Inc. closed up $1.00 or 5.29% to $19.89, one day after the company reported that its second-quarter profit rose 59%, and sales slightly beat Wall Street analysts’ expectations. Its net income rose to $19.1 million, compared with $12 million in the same period a year earlier. Meanwhile, revenue rose 28% to $127.3 million.

Shares of Bear Stearns closed up $8.76 or 7.67% to $123.00, on news that it is in serious talks with a number of outside investors, including Warren Buffett, about selling as much as 20% of the firm. Stock of General Motors closed up $3.22 or 9.36% to $37.64, on news that United Auto Workers Union had reached a tentative agreement to end the two-day strike. This assisted other automobile stocks as well.

Shares of Merrill Lynch closed down $0.37 or 0.51% to $71.75, on negative brokerage notes from Credit Suisse First Boston and Goldman Sachs. U.S. light crude oil for November delivery rose 77 cents to $80.30 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Prices had fallen in the morning after a government report showed weekly crude supplies showed a rise.
