PortfolioCrafter - Market Commentary 8/22/07

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

PortfolioCrafterStocks rallied to close higher to cap four days of Federal Reserve-fueled gains as four major banks tapped the Fed for funds and talk of deal-making further eased liquidity concerns in the credit markets. Takeover talk and bets that the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates next month cooled worries about the impact of the tightening credit market on equities and the economy.

Today, the Dow Jones industrial average closed up 145.27 or 1.11% to 13,236.13, the broader S&P 500 closed up 16.95 or 1.17% to 1,464.07, and the tech-fueled Nasdaq Composite closed up 31.50 or 1.25% to 2,552.80.

Market breadth was positive and volume was moderate. On the New York Stock Exchange, winners topped losers by close to 3 to 1 on volume of 1.43 billion shares. On the Nasdaq, advancers topped decliners by 2 to 1 as 1.81 billion shares changed hands.

The recent ‘flight to safety’ by investors seems to be on the wane, and suggests that worries about the credit market are dampening. The M&A activity has certainly helped. It is expected that over the next few weeks we’ll see narrow gyrations, less volatility and a stabilization period. The meeting by the Feds seemed to remind investors that the central bank and Washington are aware of the pummeling the financial markets have taken over the last few weeks on concerns about the credit and mortgage markets. It also raised hopes that the Federal Reserve will cut the fed funds rate at its Sept. 18 policy meeting. Additionally, the U.S. Federal Reserve has been injecting billions into the banking system over the last few weeks, so as to keep liquidity flowing. The European Central Bank said it also plans to add 40 billion euros to the banking system.

Stock of MGM Mirage closed up $7.05 to $81.37, on news that Dubai World will buy a 9.5% stake in a deal worth more than $5 billion. Dubai World will buy a 9.5% stake for about $2.4 billion. It will also invest about $2.7 billion to acquire a 50% stake in MGM’s CityCenter project, a $7.4 billion, 76-acre Las Vegas development of hotels, condos and retail outlets due to open in 2009. Dubai World will pay MGM Mirage an additional $100 million if the project opens on time and on budget.

Stock of TD Ameritrade closed up $0.80 to $17.15, and that of E*Trade closed down $0.32 to $15.25, on reports of merger talks. This merger could reduce some of the intense competition in the online brokerage industry, where several small players have been fighting for market share.

Shares of Accredited Home Lenders closed down $0.45 to $6.10, after stating that it won’t take any more loan applications and that it will cut 1,600 jobs, due to the problems in the sub-prime mortgage lending market. The company will close all of its retail lending business, consisting of 60 branches and five central support operations, by Sept. 5, affecting 480 workers. It also plans to shut five of 10 wholesale divisions, eliminating 490 of 830 jobs.

Stock of Toll Brothers closed up $1.04 or 4% to $22.13, despite reporting slumping earnings and warned about its outlook. Its net income tumbled to $26.5 million, from $174.6 million a year earlier. Revenue fell 21% to $1.21 billion

U.S. light crude oil for October delivery fell 31 cents to settle at $69.26 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, erasing early gains after the government reported a surprise increase in crude oil supplies.

PortfolioCrafter - Market Commentary 8/21/07

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

PortfolioCrafterStocks closed mixed amid conflicting signals on whether the Federal Reserve would move again to address the credit crunch roiling the financial markets. Investors welcomed a meeting among Federal Reserve Chairman Bernanke, Senator Dodd and Treasury Secretary Paulson on the problems in the financial markets.

Today, the Dow Jones industrial average closed down 30.49 or 0.23% to 13,090.86, while the broader S&P 500 closed up 1.57 or 0.11% to 1,447. 12. The tech-fueled Nasdaq Composite closed up 12.71 or 0.51% to 2, 521.30.

Market breadth was positive. On the New York Stock Exchange, winners beat losers by more than 5 to 3 on volume of 1.3 billion shares. On the Nasdaq, advancers beat decliners by a slim margin on volume of 1. 7 billion shares.

Investors have been worried about the tightening of credit - connected to the housing market collapse and problems with the sub- prime mortgage market. However, they found some comfort as reports emerged about the closed door morning meeting among Bernanke, Paulson and Dodd. Senate Banking Committee leader Christopher Dodd said after the meeting that Bernanke pledged to use all the tools at his disposal to keep markets working. The Federal Reserve has been infusing billions into the banking system in recent days as a means of trying to keep the liquidity moving.

It is expected that lifting of portfolio caps on housing finance leaders would reassure investors further. However, the Feds appear to be reluctant to lift the caps. Taking the caps off Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac would provide assurance to people who can reasonably get good mortgages.

Shares of Capital One Financial closed up $1.75 or 2.6% to $68.47, after stating that it is closing its GreenPoint mortgage unit, that it will cut 1,900 jobs and shutter 31 offices by the end of the year. The company will take $860 million in charges as it closes its GreenPoint Mortgage unit, which it acquired last December as part of a $13.2 billion deal for North Fork Bancorp Inc.

Stock of Target Corp. closed up 1.7% to $60.10, after weathering a choppy environment for consumer spending. Its net income rose to $686 million, from $609 million driven by better gross margins and a bigger contribution from its credit-card division.

Shares of LSI Logic closed up $0.44 or 7% to $6.62, after the company said it will sell its mobility products unit for $450 million to Infineon Technologies AG. The chip maker said it will use some of the proceeds toward a $500 million share repurchase plan.

U.S. light crude oil for September delivery fell $1.65 to settle at $69.47 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Cramer said on Monday that the Federal Reserve decision to cut its discount interest rate to 5.75% saved the market from a 1,000-point decline. This helped 7 million homeowners but also “helps your stocks go higher, and it will continue to help your stocks go higher,” he said.

PortfolioCrafter - Market Commentary 8/20/07

Monday, August 20th, 2007

PortfolioCrafterStocks ended mostly higher amid signs that liquidity pressures may be easing and a rally in short-term Treasury bills fostered thinking the Federal Reserve might cut interest rates further.

Today, the Dow Jones industrial average closed up 42.27 or 0.32% to 13,121.35, while the broader S&P 500 closed down 0.39 or 0.03% to 1,445.55. The tech-fueled Nasdaq Composite closed up 3.56 or 0.14% to 2,508.59.

Market breadth was mixed. On the New York Stock Exchange, winners beat losers 10 to 7 on volume of 1.5 billion shares. On the Nasdaq, decliners and advancers were roughly even on volume of 1.7 billion shares.

Investor worries about ongoing problems in the credit and mortgage markets continue - though to a lower extent. They still await the reduction in fed funds rate, which affects consumer loans. The feel is that the Fed will cut the fed funds rate at the Sept. 18 policy meeting. The central bank has added another $3.5 billion to the banking system overnight, extending its recent run of infusing cash into the system, in tune with central banks worldwide. However, credit worries are not likely to disappear anytime soon, particularly with the next Fed meeting one month away.

Stock of Thomburg Mortgage closed down $1.54 or 10% to $13.50, after selling over 35% of its assets and reducing its borrowing to lower its risk. Thornburg said it sold off $20.5 billion of assets and reduced short-term borrowings by an equivalent amount.

Shares of Countrywide Financial closed down $1.62 or 7.5% to $19.81, after reporting that it has started laying off employees, in an effort to cut costs amid its ongoing credit crunch. The company employs a total of about 61,000 people, and about 6,800 of them worked in sales at Full Spectrum as of June 30.
Shares of SunTrust closed down $0.58 to $79.92, after the bank said it will cut about 2,400 jobs or 7% of its workforce by 2009.

Stock of Lowe’s closed up $1.63 or 6% to $28.50, after reporting a bigger-than-expected - 9% jump in second-quarter profits. Earnings came to $1.02 billion, compared with $935 million a year earlier. Total sales rose 5.8% to $14.2 billion, aided by the opening of 26 new stores.

U.S. light crude oil fell 86 cents to settle at $71.12 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, sliding on signs that Hurricane Dean is unlikely to disrupt refining centers in the Gulf of Mexico.

All the best,
Manuel Jesus-Backus
