PortfolioCrafter - Market Commentary 6/26/06

Tuesday, June 26th, 2007

PortfolioCrafter Stocks finished lower after a volatile session as a slightly better-than-expected report on housing and deal news couldn’t offset concerns about interest rates, the sub-prime mortgage market and hedge fund woes. A number of funds have taken significant leverage and investors are waiting to see how credit markets deal with this.

Today, the Dow Jones industrial closed down 14.39 or 0.11% to 13,337.66, the broader S&P 500 closed down 4.85 or 0.11% to 1,492.89, and the tech-laden Nasdaq closed down 2.92 or 0.32% to 2,574.16.

Market breadth was negative. On the New York Stock Exchange, losers beat winners nearly 20 to 11 on volume of 1.73 billion shares. On the Nasdaq, decliners topped advancers 16 to 13 on volume of 2.05 billion shares.

Analyst speculate that more hedge funds could follow the path of collapse and the situation could lead to a tightening of credit and ultimately disrupt the bond market. It is expected that the sub-prime mortgage woes will spread, and will prompt the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates.

Investors appeared to be unfazed by a pair of economic reports that missed forecasts including a new home sales reading for May which fell 1.6% to 915,000 in May. The Conference Board also reported that its consumer confidence index fell short of estimates. Investors have been gearing up for the Federal Reserve’s two-day rate setting meeting and the central bank is widely expected to hold interest rates at 5.25%. As always, investors will be carefully reading the accompanying statement for any change in language.

Shares of Kroger fell 6.7% to close at $27.68, after it turned in first-quarter earnings that jumped 10% but weren’t good enough to please investors who had been expecting more. The company said that labor strife at a distribution center hurt its quarterly earnings, stoking investor worries about a recent strike authorization vote in Southern California. It reported a first quarter’s profit at $336.6 million, compared with last year’s income of $306.4 million.

Stock of Lennar closed down $1.20 or 3% to $37.55, after reporting a loss and warning of continued losses in the third quarter. The company reported a net loss of $244.2 million down from net income of $324.7 million. Its statement talked of worse than expected weakness in the housing market, which it said made it impossible to give specific guidance going forward.

Shares of Roche closed up $0.10 to $85.80, after making a bid for Ventana Medical Systems whose shares closed up $24.69 or 48% to $76.43. Roche would launch a hostile tender offer to acquire Ventana Medical Systems for about $3 billion after its efforts to negotiate a friendly deal were rebuffed. The offer of $75 per share in cash represents a 45% premium to its closing stock price of $51.74 on Monday.

U.S. light crude for August lost $1.41 to $67.77 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

All the best,

Mad Money / Jim Cramer Daily Recap 6/25/07

Tuesday, June 26th, 2007

OnlineTradersForum.com - traders and investors sharing ideasPlease do your own research, and verify all information before acting on it. This summary of Cramer’s picks is not intended to replace watching the shows, where his comments about the stocks often include advice about entry and exit points.

On Monday’s show Cramer described more of the methods of his madness:

Buy stocks on down days that have just received upgraded by an analyst.

Buy a stock that has a price-to-earnings multiple that’s lower than its growth rate.

Sell stocks with decelerating growth.

Buy stocks incrementally on the way down.

Always try to sell into strength.

Finding bottoms:

Wait for most or all analysts to downgrade a stock.

If a company has bad news or rumors and doesn’t decline.

Insider buying after a huge decline.

Buying in larger and larger increments as the stock declines.

Look for broken stocks, not broken companies.

PortfolioCrafter - Market Commentary 6/22/06

Monday, June 25th, 2007

PortfolioCrafterStocks finished lower as jitters resurfaced about the impact of the distressed sub-prime mortgage market and of higher interest rates on financial firms. Investors continue to be sensitive to the mortgage-backed securities situation and how this leverage creates an uncertain environment. Analysts opine that high interest rates could lead to more problems.

Today, the Dow Jones industrial closed down 8.21 or 0.06% to 13,352.05, the broader S&P 500 closed down 4.82 or 0.32% to 1,497.74, and the tech-laden Nasdaq closed down 11.88 or 0.46% to 2,577.08.

Market breadth was negative. On the New York Stock Exchange, losers beat winners by 11 to 5 on volume of 1.74 billion shares. On the Nasdaq, decliners beat advancers by 19 to 10 on volume of 2.07 billion shares.

In economic news, existing home sales slid to a four-year low of 5.99 million units in May, against the expected reading of 6 million. Median home prices continued their decline, falling from a year earlier for the 10th straight month to $223,700. The weak housing number helped dispel fears on Wall Street that the Federal Reserve would have to start raising interest rates.

Shares of Bear Steams closed down $4.65 or 3.2% to $139.10, as news of its probable rescue attempt for the second hedge fund spread in the market. Stock of the Blackstone Group closed down $2.62 or 7.5% to $32.44, just one day after the private equity firm made its market debut on the NYSE.

Stock of General Motors closed up $0.81 or 2.3% to $36.27, after Goldman Sachs upped its rating of the company to “buy” from “neutral” on expectations that the automaker could be successful in its planned labor talks with the United Auto Workers this year.

Shares of Doral Financial closed down $0.49 or 30% to $1.11, after the company announced its No. 2 shareholder withdrew a takeover offer, possibly clearing the way for a buyout from Bear Stearns’ private equity arm.

U.S. light crude for August ended 4 cents higher at $69.18 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

PortfolioCrafter - Market Commentary 6/22/06

Friday, June 22nd, 2007

PortfolioCrafterStocks fell sharply in a volatile session and posted steep weekly losses, amid concerns about rising interest rates around the world, along with hedge-fund trouble linked to sub-prime mortgages. Sub-prime woes have continued to keep investors nervous over rising interest rates. Additionally, traders also said stock transfers from some major indexes were keeping investors on the sidelines.

Today, the Dow Jones Industrial average closed down 185.58 or 1.37% to 13,360.26, the broader S&P 500 closed down 19.63 or 1.29% to 1,502.56, while the tech-laden Nasdaq closed down 28.00 or 1.07% to 2,588.96.For the week, the Dow fell 2%, the S&P declined 1.9%, and the Nasdaq lost 1.4%.

Market breadth was negative. On the New York Stock Exchange, losers beat winners three to one on volume of 2.6 billion shares. On the Nasdaq, decliners topped advancers by a margin of 20 to 9 on volume of 2.7 billion shares.

Ongoing worries about whether rising bond yields and mortgage rates would hurt the economy, returned today. In addition, rumors about more hedge fund problems were hurting the market. While Bear Stearns is bailing out one fund to the tune of $3.2 billion, and is working on a rescue plan for the other, the news still spooked investors.

The market has been quite volatile in the last few weeks, based on interest rates and inflation and stuff like that. Treasury yields have jumped in recent weeks on concerns over rising rates and inflation worldwide, especially in red hot economies such as China. Investors have worried that higher rates could further damage the already battered housing market and crimp consumer spending.

Shares of Blackstone debuted at $36.45 a share, about an 18% premium over the price underwriters paid for the stock Thursday. Blackstone priced 133.3 million common units at $31 to raise $4.13 billion. The underwriters would sell an additional 20 million shares to meet any excess demand. That would boost the total offering to $4.75 billion, making it the largest U.S. IPO of the year and the sixth largest ever.

BP is facing pressure from the Kremlin, and is close to a deal that would give up its holdings in a $20 billion Russian natural-gas project to state-controlled gas monopoly Gazprom. BP Plc would sell Gazprom its 62.9% in the company which holds the license for the Kovykta gas field in East Siberia. It would also sell its 50% interest in East Siberian Gas Company, the company constructing the regional gasification project. They aim to form a strategic alliance with Gazprom, to invest jointly in major long-term energy projects or swap assets around the world.

Oil prices rose as talks failed between the Nigerian government and labor union officials aimed at ending a general strike in Africa’s largest oil exporter. U.S. light crude gained 50 cents to $69.15 a barrel.

All the best,
Manuel Jesus-Backus
